The Role of Oxidative stress in the Initiation and Progression of Systemic Sclerosis

Paris-Redox-2020-Speakers d.j.mulder

Dr. Udo Mulder from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands will join the Paris Redox 2020 Congress and present his study with a talk entitled "The Role of Oxidative stress in the Initiation and Progression of Systemic Sclerosis".

Summary of the talk: Systemic Sclerosis is a progressive systemic autoimmune disease with widepread fibrosis of skin and internal organs. Unfortunately, no adequate curative treatment is available. A central feature of this disease is vasculopathy of small arteriols and capillaries, which clinically manifests as cold-induced painful discolorations of the fingers, known as Raynaud's phenomenon. In severe cases, this vasculopathy can progress to digital ulceration and necrosis, and in some patients, the involvement of the pulmonary circulation leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is eventually lethal. My research focusses on the early pathogenetic changes that occur systemic sclerosis and the role of oxidative stress in its initiation and progression. In the presentation, I will discuss the rationale for the role of oxidative stress in the disease.
